Doing Double Duty

The WiFlyer is probably the largest travel router we've reviewed, at about 3.2-by-5.1 inches, but it's still pocketable if you have large pockets, and weighs just 6.5 ounces. It's a bit larger than the rest because it includes both a Wi-Fi router and a dialup modem, both of which can be used at once to unwire a dialup connection. No other pocket router has both features. Handy indicator lights at the top show both wireless and dialup connection status.

Bringing Up the Rear

The rear of the WiFlyer has three jacks. From left to right, there's the modem port, a broadband Ethernet port, and a second Ethernet port to connect a computer or other network device directly. You could attach a network storage drive to this extra Ethernet port, or simply use it instead of Wi-Fi when needed. Most travel routers have only one Ethernet port.

Extending Range

The side of the WiFlyer has a volume control for the speaker -- extremely useful for troubleshooting dialup connections -- and an external antenna jack for extending range if desired.
